The RCD, A Miraculous Life Saving Device

When did you last press the 'TEST' button on your RCD, or Residual Current Device? Not sure, well RCD's should be tested quarterly. Next you will be telling me you haven’t even got one, wait, you haven't? Well in that case, you need to know just how vital they are to the safety of an electrical system, especially the one serving you and your family.

Far from ethical or legal experiments by the Nazis during WW2 has given us important data on how human beings react to electricity passing through their bodies. It was discovered that up to 30 mA, or 0.003 of an amp is safe to humans, beyond that level is potentially hazardous to one’s health.

So guess what rating a domestic RCD has, yes it's 30mA. So the RCD monitors the outgoing current in a circuit, and compares it to the amount of current returning. The RCD allows up to 30mA to leave the circuit, i.e. to earth, but trips when a greater amount of current goes missing – i.e. to a person.

Make Sure You Hire A Professional, Ask For ID

Hello and welcome to the next instalment of my blog, I really do appreciate you taking the time to read, and I hope you get as much out of it as I do.

This week I want to talk about how important it is to make sure the electrician you hire to work in your home, is a competent professional who is qualified and approved to do so.

This is actually achieved very easily by simply asking for ID. Every approved electrician out there will carry proof that they are registered on the competent persons register known as being Part P approved. To allow the electrician to successfully apply to be on this register, they must prove their competence with certificates of training and qualifications.

The Wettest Winter Ever

It's official - this winter is the wettest on record.

I suspect everybody has worked that out, especially when we are watching news footage of river levels at some poor soul’s door knocker, but now we know for sure. Of course people are aware how important it is to ensure their electrics at home or work are safe, and fit for use. The only problem however is usually affording that luxury.

A professional electrician does cost money, as do all other trades. This winter, during the wet and windy weather unexpected outgoings have come in the shape of leaking roofs, blown off tiles, knocked down fences and much more. This may have led to the neglect of the electrical system due to finances.

Valentine's Day

Hands up who is glad January is out of the way? With an enlarged waistline, an empty wallet, bad weather and of course, the HMRC, January can be tough. The good news is February has arrived, and now it’s time for Sheffield, and the rest of South Yorkshire to get all romantic on Valentine’s Day.

The key ingredients to a nice romantic evening are fancy food, a good bottle of vino, and of course a date. But of equal importance to all these things, a softly lit, ambient and seductive setting.

A candle or two will certainly add to this, but do not create enough light on their own to see properly, not always a bad thing on blind dates, but never good when you can’t see what is on your dinner plate.

My First Blog

Wow, this isn’t what I expected when I decided to be a sparky, funny how the modern world works sometimes.

First of all, I hope you had a great Christmas and happy New Year to you. I really do love Christmas, but when January comes, I have to say, I’m ready to get back to work and get stuck in.

Secondly, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Ashley Boxall, I’m 29 years old, and a born and bred Sheffielder. I’ve been an electrician for eight years, three years ago I decided to set my own business up.  Progressive Electrical Solutions was founded in 2010 and I’ve been busy fixing and installing Sheffield’s electrics ever since.
